Halloween Hints

When your 8 year old wants to sleep in her Elsa costume from endless exuberance for Halloween, it’s no wonder parents attach so much meaning to this happy holiday. For many it lands right up there with Thanksgiving and Christmas on the favorite scale. Halloween is a multibillion dollar industry as goblins fill our lawn, we transform into mythical characters, and delight in a treasure trove of sugar treats. For me, Halloween also holds childhood memories for me. Being one who likes to play dress up, I remember wrapping myself in sheets to become a Greek goddess and carrying my

Little Toes, Big Changes

Susan and Angela are pleased to welcome their Legal Assistant, Christi Leupold, as Guest Blogger having just returned from maternity leave to provide perspective on the complexity of big life changes.     I screamed.  My plan was to have an epidural and not feel any of the labor.  But my plan was thwarted when my epidural did not work properly.  Instead, I was in extreme pain as I brought my daughter into this world.  Seconds later, she was safely in my arms and I was already starting to forget about the pain.  I counted them, ten little toes and

Magic in Moments

Look at her long legs stretched all the way to the floor.  Look at her outfit compared to her younger sister’s – the fancy dress dismissed for a fashion statement.  Look at this girl near 10 years old, with the knowledge behind those grown up glasses that she is now sitting on a stranger’s lap, not the comforting lap of a magical man.  This photo was taken last week and after posting it for friends and family to see – I had a moment of embarrassment when I realized my state of denial. Denial comes in many forms, frequently followed

September Celebration

I leaned over to my client and whispered, “If I leave the courtroom suddenly, it’s because I’m in labor.”  She was the mother of three, so I knew she would understand. Earlier that morning my body gave clear signs that “this was the day” I would give birth to my first child. My client had waited for months for her court date. She was desperate for child support, this was the day, and I was determined there be no further delay. It was September 20, 1983, well before the era of cell phones for every day living. It was the

Being a Believer

My daughters went to their first concert this month and I missed it.  Last December, their dad and I decided it would be their gift from Santa Claus.  He was Santa this past year and in charge of making the purchase.  I knew all along I would not be accompanying them.  I felt the sting when the initial decision was made, but I knew I had 7 months to get over it. I also had sufficient time to figure out how I would participate in some small way for this momentous and fun occasion.  We went shopping to pick out

Thanksgiving

Among the many gifts my mother left me was the capacity to be perpetually grateful.  When bestowed with the smallest act of kindness, she felt treated like royalty.  Someone who offered her a seat on the bus or a cup of coffee was spoken of with high esteem for days to follow. My mother’s family lost their Nebraska farm land in the Great Depression when she was ten. With her 8th grade education, she left home at 16 to work as a housekeeper.  She married and lived in and out of poverty with my alcoholic father. She bore eight children
